ASHLEY HICKLIN Live on BBC Radio York with Presenter Matt Seymour. Performing “Never Say Never”, taken from the debut album “Parrysland”…
Lyrics / Song-text:
Hold your love, my dear,
They sent a message, this morning, twas clear,
For I will sail the seven seas,
Fight for my country yeah it would seem,
Will you wait, for me, my dear?
And if I return, from front line duty,
There will be bells galore in spring,
And oh no dont cry, my love, for I will try,
My very best for you and I,
If you wait, for me, my dear.
Drive baby drive, take a left, take a right,
Show your true colours, Were like strangers in the night,
Lets brim the tank full, theres a roadtrip in store and,
Buckle your belt yeah, lets head for the moors,
Head for the moors, head for the moors.
Town after town, saw a clothes garment fly,
Come the end of the world, we had both become shy,
And in the bright, city lights, came a dare unto me,
So we chased round the minster going, Starkers and free,
Starkers and free, yeah ee yeah
Starkers and free!
Were sewing the seed, the never say never dream,
Who knows, this could be,
The never say never, the never say never,
Dream, Oh its a dream.
Smile baby smile, once, in a while,
Wont you opt to be an optimist on the long green mile,
For the devil is a doubt, that burns a conflict in me,
So let the rain pour down, and the confidence free,
Confidence free, confidence free!
Were sewing the seed, the never say never dream,
Who knows, this could be, The never say never,
Oh oh oh, the never say never, Well well,
Were sewing the seed, the never say never dream,
Who knows, this could be, The never say never,
Oh oh oh, the never say never,
Dream, Dream.

Wrote this song while I was living and working in the city and longing to get back to the country. That wish has now come true and here's the video to prove it. Artist: Morris P Rainville

The last song of their set (before the encore) at the Beachland Tavern in Cleveland on Thursday, June 25, 2009, was this track from their 2007 release, Buckle in the Bible Belt. Sadly, it’s broken into 2 parts because the batteries gave out on camera 2 and I had to switch back to camera 1. This is part 1.

Thanks to Cormac McCarthy and Joel and Ethan Coen. Never been to Del Rio, except for in my head. Thanks also to Lori H. for helping me to imagine how beautiful Texas is.
Del Rio shines in the hot moonlight
In the middle of summer on a Saturday night
Got a fifty dollar bill in my left hand
Spend it in one place, yes I can
Got a silver belt buckle and Gila boots
Got a monkey on my back I cant shake loose
Im standin in the gutter on Avenue T
Just Jesus, Mary, the Devil and me
You do what you got to do
Or you do without
Lifes cheap on the Rio Grande
Without a doubt
Beer and whiskey born and bred
No ‘count white trash better off dead
When the sheriff come, daddy ran out the back
Down the alley to the railroad tracks
He called from Alpine the very next day
I could tell from his voice he was gone to stay
Things got tougher, well I guess
Thats how it is round here, more or less
You do what you got to do
Or you do without
Lifes cheap on the Rio Grande
Without a doubt
Theres a 7-11 over on third
I walk in without a word
Pull out my daddys .45
Just doin what he taught me to do to survive
Del Rio shines in the hot moonlight
In the middle of summer on a Saturday night
Got $500 and blood on my hands
As the wind comes up across the Rio Grande
You do what you got to do
Or you do without
Lifes cheap on the Rio Grande
Without a doubt

A 1983 hit for Conley, it went to number 1 on the country charts. We polished a lot of belt buckles with this one in the mid-eighties. The guitar is a 2006 Fender American Special Mahogany HSS Stratocaster 60th Anniversary Diamond Series. This guitar features a hum-bucker pickup in the bridge position which I am using in this video. Sounds a little like a Gibson Les Paul I think (without the weight).
