Should Islam be Brought to Schools?

A growing number of groups are calling for public schools to make accommodations for their Islamic communities. Some are requesting a separate area for Muslim children to go when they’re fasting in order to avoid sitting in lunch rooms. Others are requesting footbaths in bathrooms, and separate rooms where Islamic students can go to perform daily prayers. Alyona asks, are Americas really ready for Islam to go mainstream in public schools? Alyona discusses this with Bahir Mustafa from the New York Civic Participation Project. Mustafa discusses how Muslims are not recognized in these schools.

What is The Atheist Experience?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas, geared at an atheist and non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

Five English Hymns

We usually sing our hymns, but they are of course, many of them, the most wonderful poetry. To show that this is so I am posting a reading I made some time ago of five of my favourite hymns. The video was made on my old computer and so is a bit shaky, but the sound is good.

When I was a boy we had hymn-singing every day in school accompanied by prayers. At my grammar school we had two assemblies, one in the morning and one before we scampered off home for the day and each assembly was for prayers and the singing of one or two hymns. In this way some of the very best poetry of our own and previous years became indelibly embedded in our minds – or in mine at least! Plus also of course the Book of Common Prayer and the Revised Version of the Holy Bible. This was to present us with some of the most profound and beautiful language ever written in English on a daily basis and in the most available form, in speech and in singing.

I expect the poor little buggers of today, if ever their minds are directed toward higher things, are done so in an altogether antiquarian manner and without any spiritual guidance on the part of teachers for the most part unbelievers. This is a great loss and an occasion for prolonged public mourning – but I suppose it is too late now to recapture the rapture of my early days.

Lots of people on YouTube rail against religion, and up to a point I am with them. But they forget that the Christian religion is much more than oppression, much more than religious wars and burnings at the stake. It is also a matter of overflowing joy, of the expression of wonder and the love that lives in us all and needs only an occasion to make it flow outward into the world. Our daily assemblies were such an occasion, and our hymns and prayers were full of beautiful language and lovely song, and one can only deeply regret their passing.

If Atheists Acted Religious

I doubt many religious people could stomach a taste of their own medicine. I’ve known people who got fired when it was discovered that they were an atheist. Atheists are one of the last groups that it is still okay to discriminate against (not only okay, but encouraged). A major reason for this is because religion cannot hold up to our criticisms; therefore, censoring us becomes the only viable solution. The truth offends. Everyone who did audio in this animation is VERY much worth your subscription. In order of appearance: BionicDance (the teacher), KingHeathen (the door-to-door atheist), LovingDoubt (angry happy holidays customer), and ProfMTH (marriage activist).

National Day of Prayer Goes On – Despie Court Ruling

Welcome America & The World – I am ObamaStein. I am not here wanting your money or to take any thing from anyone. I comment and talk about things that I have strong feelings about. If you have a problem with my views, my criticizing Obama or anyone else, if you have a problem with my outfit, mask anything else -that is your problem! My “mask” represents the monster that our (Fed. gov.) has become. I am a reg. Indp. voter. So I owe nothing to either party. I am not here to please or support anyone!

The 59th annual National Day of Prayer was held Thursday. A federal judge recently declared unconstitutional. President Truman signed a bill establishing an official National Day of Prayer in 1952, but U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb in Wisconsin ruled April 15 that the law violates the ban on government-backed religion. You would have to say America was founded by people of faith. I do not believe those people wanted a gov. & judges like we have in America today.

Prayer has been removed from the classroom. I am not overly religious myself, but I have no problem with anyone wanting to say a prayer in school or anywhere else. A small group of people do have a problem with this & they rule – hummm??? It is kind of odd. If it had not been for people of faith, these same anti-religious folks would not have a country to voice their contempt of religion. Look at people in our schools today. They are far behind foreign students. They lack respect for those who came before them. They have lost something from generations before them. Maybe prayer? Maybe respect? Maybe discipline? I would say all 3 & more.

Muslim Prayer

From: http://hvg.heinemann.co.uk/login.aspx. Muslims at prayer: a group chant their prayers, Muslims bow and touch their heads to the ground in prayer, two Muslims, under an archway, begin their prayers at a mosque, people gather at modern looking mosque, taking their shoes off before hurrying to prayer, at another mosque all of the worshipers bow in unison before standing, ceremonial robes are worn by all at another.

Jesus In My School

Proving ID = Creationism in disguise. NCSE’s staff worked behind the scenes in the archives to find the missing links tying “intelligent design” to its creationist ancestry.

When creationism flares up in the United States, the NCSE is there to put out the fires. The National Center for Science Education defends the teaching of evolution in the public schools. The NCSE is a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice to keep evolution in the science classroom and “scientific creationism” out.
