Christopher Hitchens on GOP Governors, School Prayer and Newt Gingrich (1994 Part 1)
November 21, 1994 http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FChristopher-Hitchens%2Fe%2FB000APSKR0%3Fqid%3D1278211708%26sr%3D1-2-ent&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325
Robert Upshur “Bob” Woodward http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBob-Woodward%2Fe%2FB000APXDGS%3Fqid%3D1280272418%26sr%3D1-2-ent&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325 (born March 26, 1943) is regarded as one of America’s preeminent investigative reporters and non-fiction authors. He has worked for The Washington Post since 1971 as a reporter, and is currently an associate editor of the Post. While a young reporter for The Washington Post in 1972, Woodward was teamed up with Carl Bernstein; the two did much, but not all, of the original news reporting on the Watergate scandal. These scandals led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. Gene Roberts, the former executive editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer and former managing editor of The New York Times, has called the work of Woodward and Bernstein “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.”
On The Simpsons episode “Whacking Day”, Bart reads a book called The Truth About Whacking Day, written by Bob Woodward.
In the movie The Skulls, the character Will Beckford tries to compare himself to Woodward while reading his column in the school newspaper.
In the movie Dick, which is about Watergate, Woodward is played by actor/comedian Will Ferrell. Woodward and Bernstein are depicted as two bickering, childish near-incompetents, small-mindedly competitive with each other.
In the movie Wired, adapted from Woodward’s book Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi, Woodward is portrayed onscreen by J. T. Walsh.
The graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore is set in a version of 1985 where Nixon is a fifth-term president. A throwaway line reveals that a pair of unknown journalists, Woodward and Bernstein, were found murdered in a garage in the early 1970s. This same scenario is used as a dystopian detail in Back to the Future 2. In the episodic video game Watchmen: The End is Nigh, telling about events before the graphic novel, Rorschach and Nite Owl II find Woodward and Bernstein dead in the crime lord Underboss’ car’s trunk.
Woodward scripted the “Der Roachenkavalier” episode of Hill Street Blues that aired on February 3, 1987.
In one Bloom County series, Woodward writes a fictional expose about the late Bill the Cat’s “ugly, sordid private life”, based entirely on information he got out of Opus the Penguin (although Mickey Mouse and Charlie Brown also appear to have something to do with it). A three-Sunday strip-long mockumenatry based on the Woodward book was used later to explain how Bill came back to life after dying in a car crash.
In “The Long Lead Story”, episode 5 of the NBC television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Matthew Perry’s character Matt Albie is talking to reporter Martha O’Dell, played by Christine Lahti. She points to his show board and says, “The Lobster sketch isn’t funny yet,” to which he replies, “Tell me something else I don’t know, Woodward”; a sarcastic jab at O’Dell’s decision to report on a sketch-comedy show despite being a Pulitzer Prize-winning political reporter.
In The Wire episode “React Quotes”, a borderline-incompetent journalist is referred to as “not exactly Bob Woodward.”

In 1995, Time magazine selected him as the Person of the Year for his role in leading the Republican Revolution in the House, ending 40 years of the Democratic Party being in the majority. During his tenure as Speaker, he represented the public face of the Republican opposition to President Bill Clinton.

note: recently, atheist billboards have been vandalized (one sign that read “one nation, indivisible” had “under god” spray painted under the phrase). these people really fail to realize what “one nation, indivisible (under god or not)” means…they use it as a tool to divide us, which is DEFEATING THE POINT, ASSHATS.
as for this video, repeating mindless bullshit for the sake of making people feel ‘patriotic’ is bullshit…plain and simple. take prayers for example…repeating a prayer amongst a group of people shouldn’t make you feel righteous.

Christopher Hitchens vs. Pat Buchanan Part 6: Prayer and Single-Payer Health Care (1993)

Marion Gordon “Pat” Robertson (born March 22, 1930) is a prominent political spokesman for the Christian right in American politics and a highly visible spokesman in the media for Fundamentalist religion. He is the founder of numerous organizations and corporations, including the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), the Christian Coalition, Flying Hospital, International Family Entertainment Inc., Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation, and Regent University. He is the host of The 700 Club, a Christian TV program airing on channels throughout the United States and on CBN affiliates worldwide.
The son of U.S. Senator A. Willis Robertson, Robertson is a Southern Baptist and was active as an ordained minister with that denomination for many years, but holds to a charismatic theology not traditionally common among Southern Baptists. He unsuccessfully campaigned to become the Republican Party’s nominee in the 1988 presidential election. As a result of his seeking political office, he no longer serves in an official role for any church. His media and financial resources make him a recognized, influential, and controversial public voice for conservative Christianity in the United States.
Jerry Lamon Falwell, Sr. (August 11, 1933 — May 15, 2007) was a Christian evangelical fundamentalist Baptist pastor, televangelist, and a conservative commentator from the U.S. He was the founding pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church, a megachurch in Lynchburg, Virginia. He founded Lynchburg Christian Academy (now Liberty Christian Academy) in 1967, Liberty University in 1971, and cofounded the Moral Majority in 1979.
School prayer in its common usage refers to state-approved prayer by students in state schools. Depending on the country and the type of school, organized prayer may be required, permitted, or proscribed. Countries which prohibit school prayer often differ in their reasons for doing so: the separation of church and state is the United States’ basis for doing so (as proscribed in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution); Freedom of conscience is Canada’s; and, similar to the United States, France’s rationale is the laïcité concept.
Prayer done by private individuals by themselves when on state grounds is generally considered to be a form of free expression, and restrictions against it generally have been removed or struck down in modern democracies. However, totalitarian countries such as North Korea and, in its time, the Soviet Union have taken action against private religious expression in schools.

Anita Hill’s Testimony Part 14 – Clarence Thomas 2nd Hearing Part 23 (1991)
October 11, 1991
Howell Thomas Heflin (June 19, 1921 – March 29, 2005) was a United States Senator from Alabama, and a member of the Democratic Party.
Howell Heflin, the nephew of prominent white supremacist politician James Thomas Heflin and greatnephew of Alabama congressman Robert Stell Heflin, was born on June 19, 1921 in Poulan, Georgia. He attended public school in Alabama graduating from Colbert County High School in Leighton, Alabama. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 from Birmingham-Southern College.
During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat and recipient of two Purple Heart medals, seeing action on Bougainville and Guam.
After World War II, he attended Law School at the University of Alabama, graduating in 1948. He became a law professor, and then became the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court from 1971 to 1977.
In 1978, Heflin was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to succeed John Sparkman. He remained in the Senate, where he rose to become Chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics, until January 3, 1997. While on the Ethics Committee, he led the prosecution against fellow Senator Howard Cannon (D-NV) for violations of Senate rules.
His stances on cultural issues most often reflected the region he was from. He strongly opposed legal abortion and all gun control laws. Heflin supported prayer in public schools and opposed extending federal laws against discrimination to lesbians and gays. He voted in favor of the Gulf War and against limiting spending on defense. With Fritz Hollings from South Carolina, he was one of only two Democrats in the Senate to vote against the Family and Medical Leave Act. He occasionally voted with Republicans on taxes. On other economic issues he was more in sync with the populist wing of his party. He voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and attempts to weaken enforcement of consumer protection measures. He strongly supported affirmative action laws. He memorably voted against the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, complaining of his lack of experience and interest.
During his tenure, Heflin was considered to have bipartisan support if he were nominated for a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan. Nevertheless, Heflin did not wish to serve on the highest court in the United States.
On July 19, 1994, Senator Heflin was dining in the Capitol with some Alabama reporters, and felt like he had to sneeze. The Senator reached into his pocket and pulled out a bit of fabric and began to wipe his nose with a pair of ladies underwear. His office later released the following press release: [This morning] “I mistakenly picked up a pair of my wife’s white panties and put them in my pocket while I was rushing out the door to go to work. Rather than take a chance on being embarrassed again, I’m going to start buying colored handkerchiefs.”
Upon seeing photos in the National Enquirer showing Senator Ted Kennedy copulating with an unknown woman on the deck of Kennedy’s boat, he was said to have commented, “Well, I declare. I do believe the Senator from Massachusetts has changed his position on offshore drillin’!”
Senator Heflin died on March 29, 2005 of a heart attack.
The University of Alabama School of Law has honored Heflin with the “Howell Heflin Conference Room” in the Bounds Law Library. There is also a street named “Howell Heflin Lane” in Tuscumbia, Alabama. The Howell Heflin Lock and Dam in Alabama is named in honor of Senator Heflin. The Howell T. Heflin Seminar room in the Library of Birmingham-Southern College is named in his honor.

Shahid revisits his School
He came to promote his latest film, but ended up revisiting quite a few old memories.
When Shahid Kapoor came to Delhi to visit his alma mater and his former residence a few days ago, little did he anticipate such a rush of memories and people. Such is life, Shahid said, Its humbling. Once, I was one of the thousand students doing morning prayers in this school. But Gods been so kind. Now, I need special permission or security to get me here.
At Gyan Bharti Public School in Saket, the actor interacted with students, his teachers and the principal. Shahid, who had moved to Mumbai when he was 10, upon reaching his school, said, Schooling in Delhi was fun. It was tougher in Mumbai, where I was a bit of an outsider. By the time we accompanied him to his former house in Press Enclave, the crowd had grown significantly. As soon as Shasha (as hes called) reached the house he grew up in, neighbours gathered around, each wanting to remind him of the moments theyd shared. One of them told us, He was so naughty. Once, he put firecrackers in the postbox and blew it up!
Shahids neighbours, Rohini and Gaurav, also told us similar tales, Wed play together in the evening and would often end up fighting. Their mother said, Arrey… bade shararti the sab. Theyd pull each others hair too.
We also met Mamu, Shahids Man Friday. Mamu is the one who was with me in Delhi, and is now with me in Mumbai, said Shahid. Mamu has known Shahid since he was a child, and even pointed out the shed in which he used to live outside Shahids B-16 apartment. Maine Shahid ke saath inhi parks mein cricket khela hai, Mamu said, pointing to the lawns outside the house.

Prayers Answered – Turtuk people’s Tibetan roots – Part 2/3
A short Documentary about the Turtuk people living in remote areas of Kashmir. They say that they are originally Tibetan but later on due to Invasion from outsiders they changed their culture accordingly. Tibetan is replaced by Arabic and Buddhism by Islam, In their Heart still Tibetan Blood flows. Finally, they are our lost Brothers and Sisters. The credit of making this Documentary goes to Gelek Pasang an Inspiring film maker.
Prayers Answered is a film by Geleck Pasang, a former student of TCV school Ladakh and Bylakupee, whose film about a remote Muslim habitat and it peoples admiration for the Dalai Lama is currently on top of the list as the Peoples choice – most viewed on the site with 30956 views at the time of this report going online. About 800 films have participated in the contest that will last till July 2010.
* The film documents a visit in August 2005 of the Tibetan leader Dalai Lama to Turtuk, a remote village inhabited by ethnic Muslims on the neck of Indian Map, sharing critical border with Pakistan and China occupied Tibet.
Turtuk, once a part of Baltistan a shared strong economic and cultural ties with Tibet. They conversed in same language- western Tibet dialect, which is still used in Turtuk. The people of Turtuk invited the Dalai Lama to bless them and to re-live the ancient tie that they had once shared with Tibet. Turtuk became a part of India after the war with Pakistan in 1971.
Turtuk is a highly restricted area, totally cut out from the rest of the world and tourists are denied access to this place. However, the difference in faith has not stopped the villagers to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the visit was celebrated with great splendor and grandeur. The Muslim residents of Turtuk still treasure the visit and pray for a second visit.
The film, produced by Geleck in 2007, depicts the emphasis the Tibetan leader lays on providing modern education to the children of the village to create a better community.
Many children from this village are presently studying in a Tibetan School, practicing their own religion and pursuing academic aspirations.
In Gelecks own words, the film is a story about the journey of these children living in a new environment, preserving their religion and culture while learning basic education from a Tibetan school. I made an attempt to show through film how these children cope with the multicultural world with genuine love, brotherhood and the most importantly, sense of respect to each other.
