Part 1
Sandel describes the 1996 court case of a white woman named Cheryl Hopwood who was denied admission to a Texas law school, even though she had higher grades and test scores than some of the minority applicants who were admitted. Hopwood took her case to court, arguing the schools affirmative action program violated her rights. Students discuss the pros and cons of affirmative action. Should we try to correct for inequality in educational backgrounds by taking race into consideration? Should we compensate for historical injustices such as slavery and segregation? Is the argument in favor of promoting diversity a valid one? How does it size up against the argument that a students efforts and achievements should carry more weight than factors that are out of his or her control and therefore arbitrary? When a universitys stated mission is to increase diversity, is it a violation of rights to deny a white person admission?
PART TWO: WHATS THE PURPOSE?
Sandel introduces Aristotle and his theory of justice. Aristotle disagrees with Rawls and Kant. He believes that justice is about giving people their due, what they deserve. When considering matters of distribution, Aristotle argues one must consider the goal, the end, the purpose of what is being distributed. The best flutes, for example, should go to the best flute players. And the highest political offices should go to those with the best judgment and the greatest civic virtue. For Aristotle, justice is a matter of fitting a persons virtues with an appropriate role.

The Arrested Development of Trichotillomania VS. HeadShaving
The pros and cons of trichotillomania vs headshaving.
The terrain of deploying the concept of head shaving into trichotillomania as a therapeutic adjunct is a new terrain of discovery and subjective to the individual. It is of my opinion, that while head shaving is not a reputable source of therapy to the leading source of trichotillomania, shaving my head to break a vicious cycle of pulling had been very beneficial to me. I am simply here, to share my opinion in the value that I had learned through shaving to control the trichotillomania when it had been at a very intense and controlling time in life. I believe that having the manifested outcome of trichotillomania is dealing with the “under belly” of society’s dictates. Learning how to face the intolerance of society is a valuable learning tool that can be very strengthing to the invidual… given that it is garnered sensibly. Learning how to survive the prejuidices of society has taught me to honor my own perception of my strengths and to discard the unfounded view of society. Consequently, through my own subjective life experience… I see where concealing my hair loss arrested my own growth and development emotionally from the world around me. It is my most sincere desire to simply share an avenue of perspective that I have gleaned from my experience of an unconventional and therapeutic action of controlling trichotillomania. I do not advocate shaving alone. I do advocate a sensible approach to trichotillomania that suits the invidual according to their own life. And I encourage others to think outside of the box and learn to own their own success in the life of trichotillomania. I believe that exercise, sensible diet, vitamin supplements and prayer in addition to shaving my entire head had been very therapeutic with plenty of opportunity for growth in areas that had been otherwise unattended. (no scalp hair = nothing to pull there… which leads to LIBERATIONS AND A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY to evaluate one’s own behavior that leads to the pulling action)
It is too easy to get caught up in the dictates of society’s predisposed measure of beauty and become a prisoner to appearances. I dream of a day where women can live free enough to discard head gear and stop feeling inferior due to hair loss. Each time I conquered a piece of that battle: I grew inwardly beyond immeasurable expectation.
And it all led to breaking that *hold of trich* which created the downward spiral of anxiety.
I just know, that if that bald little 9 & 10 year old girl I used to be, could grow up and live the life of a head shaving woman and find the balance that I had: I KNOW there is a FIGHTING CHANCE FOR US ALL!
