Does this help?

I have tried to hang my own Christmas lights (my husband won't).
I end up putting them in my bushes and hanging a lit wreath on my front door and putting a spot light on it. I have a 2story home and I dont want to get up on a ladder/roof to decorate.

I have tried just over my garage door with icicle lights one year, and that looked pretty.

Have you ever seen the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey? I wish that Christmas tree light hanging was as simple as shown in that movie - I really admire those people who hang them straight, tight and perfectly lined up with the lines of their home! They either have the knack, or have it professionally done.

Happy decorating!

p.s. you asked for an how-to sight - and I have linked one below...are you the one who gave me a thumbs down?!
geezz - find your own darn link. GOOGLE IT
References :
http://www.hometips.com/articles/holiday/christmaslights/christmaslights.html

The most important thing is how to hook them together. I suggest buying a light stake from Wal-Mart for about $12. It has several plugs that you can plugs your lights into. If you use regular lights don't hook more than three or four strings together . I have been buying the commercial grade lights, also from Wal-Mart for $7.94 a string. They are 200 lights to a string and you can hook six together. They also last longer than the regular ones. You can really only learn by trial and error what works for your house. If all your lights blow you have too may hooked together and will need to replace the fuse in the first set and then adjust the number you have hooked together. Good luck!!
