Decorating tips!: Throwing a 30 yr. Anniversary party, French themed, where can I get outdoor lights?

Posted by admin in Hanging Outdoor Lighting on 11 14th, 2009

SUGGESTIONS PLEASE
I need to know a good place to go to get some Outdoor Hanging Lights with a french theme. Anything else french themed for a party that you can think of would be great.
If your answer resembles tango’s answer, don’t bother.

Most party supply or decorating stores should have what you’re looking for. Since the colors of France are the same as USA’s (Red, White and Blue–or as they say in France Bleu, Blanc, Rouge) that shouldn’t be a problem. Why don’t you have your guests come wearing berets, or buy some inexpensive berets to hand out for guests as they come through the door. Or have them dress in the vintage french style (neck scarves, striped french sailor shirts, etc.) Have a table with french themed foods, definitely assorted french cheeses, with french baguettes, cornichons (baby pickles) other french delicatessen foods. Definitely french wine, or champagne, and bottles of perrier. For the main dishes you could have ratatouille, quiche lorraine, coq au vin, or steak au poivre, with haricots verte and/or wonderful pomme frites. Or, how about Escargot? Yum! Assorted french pastries and good french coffee to end, and you’ll have a wonderful party. Oh, and don’t forget the music! Waltz musettes, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour–you won’t go wrong with them in the background. Quelle Magnifique!

Outdoor Lighting is Essential

Posted by admin in Hanging Outdoor Lighting on 11 14th, 2009

Exterior illumination is essential for any property. Homes and businesses need proper outdoor light fixtures to secure the building, greet guests, and to guide the way on foot paths and stairwells. From floodlights for the yard and driveway to lanterns and chandeliers above the doors; outdoor lighting serves to protect and provide the kind of aesthetic enhancement that will make for a more inviting space and help your home stand out.

Outdoor lighting designs are offered in selections such as traditional, vintage or modern styles. They come in a variety of finishes that will match the decor of your home or business.

Floodlights, while often considered ‘plain’, are another important lighting tool. They illuminate full, wide-open spaces, such as driveways, parking lots or a back yard. Motion sensors match well with floodlights: they’ll turn on automatically when someone approaches. This feature is useful for both safety and security.

For the home, lanterns offer an alternative to plain old floodlights to help greet guests and guide path ways to your front entry. Hanging, wall mounted, and post mounted lanterns come in different finishes and styles. Traditional style wall mount lanterns are a neighborhood favorite.  Post mounted lanterns are great when placed at the front of the driveway, making your home easy to find for guests navigating through your neighborhood.

The right lighting truly enhances the outdoor environment to make your home have great curb appeal. Bollard lights are a great way to light up pathways on your property. Trees and gardens can come to life at night with carefully placed accent lighting. Use rail lights to assure your steps and stairs are safe for you, your family, and your guests.

Enclosed porches are a great place to escape for some fresh air, for keeping the greatness of the outdoors in and the bugs out. On outdoor chandelier or lamp provides a simple, yet elegant upgrade. Chandeliers add a unique accent that can be a real conversation starter as well as create a calming environment. Outdoor lamps provide light wherever you need it. As with the other lighting fixtures, outdoor lamps and chandeliers come in a variety of colors and finishes to suit your tastes.

Outdoor Lighting Buying Guide

Posted by admin in Hanging Outdoor Lighting on 06 7th, 2009

When choosing outdoor lighting for your home, consider the overall appearance of your home. For example, how are the lighting fixtures going to look from the curb, the driveway and the front door? Too few lights can get lost and fixtures that are too small may not produce enough light on a larger home. Too many lights or overly large fixtures can look mismatched and glaring on a smaller home. Outdoor lighting should create a comfortable, safe and secure lighting experience.

Types of “Outdoor Space Lighting”:

Post Mounted fixtures

These are used to illuminate an entrance/pathway or near a driveway to make locating the driveway safer and easier. Posts come in a variety of colors and generally need to be purchased separately from the light fixture.

Lantern/Wall Mounted fixtures

These can be used at any exterior door around the home including garage, basement, back and side doors, adding safety and security around entrances. Larger homes and homes with larger front entrances lend themselves to larger fixtures and/or to a fixture on each side of the door. Smaller homes and single doors are better suited with smaller lanterns or a single lantern. Lanterns are best hung just above eye level or at least 66” from the ground.

Ceiling Mounted fixtures

An excellent option for entrances with a porch or portico to help more adequately light the area.

Hanging Fixtures

Grand entrances and tall porches lend themselves to hanging fixtures. In order to insure adequate lighting, safety for taller guests and good distance from a swinging door be sure to hang the fixture high enough. 84” from the floor is a general guideline. Lamps and Chandeliers specifically made for outdoor use are becoming a popular decorative accent to outdoor porches, pools, cabanas and other covered outdoor spaces. A fixture suited for outdoor use will have “UL Listed For Use In Damp Locations” listed on the Details & dimensions tab. This notation will indicate that the product is suited for wet or damp situations.

Accent lighting

Comes in many designs including down light, flood light, mini-accent and well lighting. Accent lighting highlights landscaping, trees, architecture and more.

Deck lighting – step and rail

Step lighting makes using stairs safer and easier by reducing shadows. Rail lighting adds ambiance and safety for night gatherings. Post mounted fixtures can be used to highlight a deck and also increases comfort and ambiance during evening use.

Garden lighting

A decorative accent within a garden or landscaping to add interest and shed light on your beautiful space.

Path lighting

Highlights walkways through your yard, adding safety and beauty. A “Spread light” style is used to define the edges of a path where the grass or garden meets the walkway. Bollard lighting is taller and used to mark an entrance or path.
