Long known for his unique spiritual authenticity, Deuter has a marvelous flair for composing aural impressions of the contentment a plant must feel when nectar flows or the jubilance of a butterfly unfolding its wings for the first time. With only a few exceptions, Deuter plays all instruments: Pied-Piper recorders softly lead the way while bass notes undulate with sensuous ease, guitars and dulcimers plink merrily, vibraphones add a silvery sheen, ethnic percussion adds a buoyant pulse, and soft chimes perk up the air. The result is music that is blissful and uplifting without being overly sweet. On the pensive “Yellow Mandala,” low drum tones and bass lines seem to cry on each other’s shoulder, the harp adds tang, and the synthesizer drones act as fresh breezes to pull away all cares. The joyous sound of kalimbas introducing “Après la Pluie” would make you think the gates of heaven opened just for you; Deuter’s simple yet expressive piano line feels as compassionate as Saint Francis, while gentle strings tug at the heart and tabla drumming races with a love-stricken pulse.
